Christmas gift idea: go through your mom's closet, pull out some awesome vintage dress that she loved way back when, and create a portrait of yourself wearing said dress. If it's a 1971 number complete with gold shoes, belt and purse, EVEN better! Then frame the portrait and present it on Christmas morning - instant winner! I had so much fun making this Christmas wish come true. Seriously, my job is way too much fun sometimes.

Now that the Christmas Cards are out, I can FINALLY post my family portraits created by Allison of English Photography last September. This portrait was about 4 years in the planning, when I decided that I wanted to redecorate my 1994 forest green front room. I love the color blue, and wanted to design my color scheme in the room around my logo colors of black, white, and blue. I knew the Salt Flats would be a perfect location to use for that specific combo. Then I decided that I wanted to go very 1950's Father-Knows-Best with our outfits, and this miracle happened: my husband was totally all gung-ho about getting his portraits done (which he has previously been less obliged to do than go to the dentist.) I can't even tell you how much I love these portraits! Allison - thank you so much for catching the vision completely, and buying those chairs, and having the band-aids, and everything else! Your technical prowess is matched only by your extreme generosity and creative genius.

These are my daughter's baptism portraits. We created them in two sessions: one a year ago, and one last spring. I have been wanting to post them for a while, but just haven't had a break to work on them. Took the day off with the flu today, and did something for myself. I am absolutely floored by this girl's good heart, her willingness to serve, and the kindness with which she treats others. She is my best helper at home, and even cleans bathrooms cheerfully. No, you can't have her. We have gotten really close in the past couple years with photography as a common interest. I hope she always carries the confidence she does now. There is nothing this girl doesn't think she can't do - and she's right. I don't care if you are on team evil, I love you, K, so much!

I am a member of many professional organizations that exist to instruct and educate photographers on how to be better at their art and business. This is the first site that I've found that is dedicated to educating consumers about what is (and isn't) good photography, and how to navigate the incredibly saturated field of people who accept money for photos. I strongly suggest you visit and read all of the "for consumer" pages on this site, whether you are looking to purchase photographic art, or you produce it yourself. The best parts are her "Lulu" and "Moondoggie" tutorials. I love those two plastic models! :-}

Nice toasty warm studio (Utah Family Photography)

The weather outside might be frightful, but inside the studio is so delightful! I really love having a studio in which to work this winter. Not that I don't enjoy photographing on location - or that I wouldn't love to do some snowy fun portraits, but sometimes it's just COLD out there at this time of year. And I'm not a cold-weather-loving person. I'm plowing through the work in my inbox, so if you are waiting for images or previews, please be patient while they are finished. Channeling Soderberg (Utah Family Photography)

There are probably only 5 or 6 people who will understand this post. Maybe it was the wicker chair, or the blue and brown backdrops, or the humongous softbox, but this session made me totally nostalgic for my adopted family from Soderberg Photography. I was incredibly lucky to have such an amazing experience to start my career. The five years I worked as a sales associate in that little studio did more ground-tilling and seed-planting for my current station than anything before or since. I feel extremely fortunate to still be BFF's with the women (and Kent!) with whom I worked. Missing you guys (especially you, Scott) this holiday season. May your pot roast not burn... and if it does, just don't tell anyone.

To the H family, thank you so much for your trust in creating your first "official" family portrait. Your little one is an absolute delight. I hope you enjoyed your pancakes! :-) I will have your online gallery ready to view your previews in about a day.

Ok, I know I'm a day late, but there is still plenty of candy out there, I'm sure! I had so much fun with my kids in my new studio this year. So many backdrop options and props to play with! :-)

My boy was not just a red ninja this year. He is Kay from the Lego Ninjago Spinjitzu series. He will be very quick to correct you if you get it wrong!

Unless you have an 8-10 year old girl, you probably don't have any idea what my oldest daughter's costume is. She is Claudeen Wolf from Monster High. She's the daughter of the Werewolf, and has a flair for fashion.

And of course Miss Taylor Swift. She has been practicing her guitar and her signature hair flips ever since we saw the real Taylor Swift in concert this month.

So it's snowing, but I can't wait for this afternoon when I get to photograph J&J's wedding! See you guys in about 6 hours! :-)

Monkeyshines and Shenanigans in the canyon (Utah Family Photography)

I have been wanting to photograph this canyon in autumn for a couple years now. We had a date reserved on the first weekend of October, and as you all know, it snowed. Great. Well, we decided to wait until the snow melted and try again, but by then the area I wanted to photograph had lost all it leaves. And I mean ALL of them. As we were driving to the location, I kept looking at all the bare gray aspens thinking, "this is going to be a disaster!" Fortunately, my sis had done her homework and found the only accessible spot with any leaves left, and it turned out to be even better than I had hoped. Phew! PS - that cute little denim jumper that miss *S* is sporting is an heirloom from her daddy. She looks way cuter in it than he did - Sorry A, but it's true!

Big Wins at SWPPA district competition

I just got a pretty nifty little package in the mail with some awards from the District print competition in Texas, hosted by the Southwest Professional Photographer's Association. I won two judges choice ribbons and had the highest scoring print case from Utah, for which I got a really lovely wooden plaque. The coolest thing that happened to me from this competition was that I received my first perfect score - 100 - for my image "The Bennett Sisters." These are my images I entered this year:

I am a bit disillusioned with newborn photography right now. I know the big thing is to do crazy physically impossible poses in tons of different hats, props, baskets, etc... Most of it I feel is unnatural and even dangerous-looking. I also feel like a person's portraits ought to have personal meaning to them, including the props in them. It's just my opinion, though, and I know everyone has a different style. Anyway, I was so fortunate to take the first professional portraits of this little angel, and my favorite images are those where she is being loved by those in her family - cuddled, protected, kissed. I did my first Trash the Dress session this summer, and coincidentally, Professional Photographer Magazine just published an article about this type of session. The article dispelled myths about Trash the Dress
sessions, mainly that you have to trash the dress you were married in. The dress featured above was purchased from a second hand store for $15 - and we had so much fun getting it wet and dirty! Our little beach excursion took place on my birthday weekend, and I gotta say it was one of the best birthdays I've ever had. We spent all morning relaxing with the kids, the evening getting crazy with the "High Beam" reflector, and after sunset at the Quick N' Tasty with milkshakes and onion rings. When this delightful mom contacted me, and we were discussing her garden portrait session, she said she really wanted some candid, lifestyle images of her kids just being kids. I tend to shoot really tight and perfectionist, so I had to mentally concentrate on loosening my style a bit, and letting moments happen. Granted, the first image here is very indicative of the classic, enduring style that I love. However, I think we created something really special in those fun, un-rehearsed moments too. Playing in the Studio

Big - no HUGE - things happening for me this fall. I am now renting a studio for portraits and ordering appointments. I have dreamed of owning my own studio since I started pushing the shutter button, but it has never worked out. Now that my youngest child is in Kindergarten, I'm yearning for the space and separation I need to make crazy awesome art. The rental situation that I have found is so awesome and so ME that I just might explode with excitement. I now have space to do large groups in the winter!! Yay!!! I spent the morning training with the incomparable Randy Collier, and learning the ropes. How lucky am I to have such a cute and willing model at my beck and call?

Yearly Back to School Portraits (Utah Child Photography)

It took my kids a couple years to figure out why I didn't buy the contract school portraits that everyone else gets at the beginning of the school year. I had to explain to them about the quality of a good photograph, and why I prefer to create their portraits myself. This year, I let them choose their own outfits (which all matched each other coincidentally!) from their school clothes, and we headed up to the stunning Albion Basin for their 2011 school portraits. I think they get it now.

Briar Rose. My very favorite Disney Princess since I was a little girl. There was always something so dignified and sweet in her poise, and maturity far beyond her 16 years. I'm afraid when I went to capture her portrait, all her little woodland creatures scampered away, which is really too bad because they would have been awfully cute props. Rose, you can't hide your obvious royalty behind your peasant clothes. You are a princess to your core! I love you.

I have only two things to say about this family: Mystery Men and Rootbeer Floats. Could there be a family more kindred to my own? I think not. I have the absolute thrill to be able to photograph this unbelievably gorgeous couple on their wedding day next month. We did a grand engagement/pre-wedding portrait weekend a couple weeks back, and I am sending in their finished images for canvas printing this week. Potter Fever is hitting an all time high in my house. We are anxiously counting down the hours and minutes until what has to be the biggest movie premiere in our house-hold history. Last month I did some portraits of our favorite Hogwart's students, and despite spells being blasted left and right, we had a great time. Thanks to all my wizards and witches for being willing to take time out of their studying for my muggle photos. How I wish with all my heart I knew how to make these images move! Here's to you Harry, and all the great things JK Rowling has done for literature, the truly magic at heart, and those of us who are still hoping for our Hogwarts letters.

Cowgirl Cousins (Utah Child Photography)

These two little rascals have a very special bond. They were born 12 days apart, and we're pretty sure they were supposed to be twins, but the Lord just knew neither myself nor my sister could handle them together so they ended up as cousins instead. We have photographed them together several times in the past years, at birth, 6 months, 2 years, 4 years, and now 5 years old. They are totally kindred spirits (total Drama Queens!) and sometimes so much alike it causes "issues." We have been so fortunate to have Little A live across the street from us since last October, and now that she's headed home to Arkansas this weekend, I am struggling to be brave and not blue! We will miss having you guys so close, and our plan to share them each summer when they're older is a must.

I just want to take a minute and publicly honor three wonderful people who left our lives this week:

Theron Nestripke

Theron has always been and will always remain my number one fan. His family are as much family to me as my own flesh and blood, and he will be missed immensely. My gut has been all tied in knots all week thinking about his wife and children he left behind. Nearly twenty years of memories I could recall, but I think my favorite is the way he would pull me aside every time I came into the house and tell me about the next referral he was sending my way. I'm sure he's still talking me up on the other side, and if they could use portraits over there, I'm willing to bet he'd find a way to hire me.

Grandma-ma (Norlyene Harding)

I'm sure Grandma-ma had one of the best family reunions ever when she quietly slipped through the veil last weekend. She lost her Mother and brother in a car accident when she was 10 years old, and her son just a few years ago, and thinking of all those awesome loved ones, along with her father, greeting her and welcoming her home has made it impossible for me to be sad about her parting. She was one cool Granny! She was a pilot, an artist, and a dotting Grandma. I'll never forget going to the ballet, the symphony, and the opera with her. She is one of the major reasons I am an artist today, as well as the one who first started calling me Kris. Love you Grandma-ma!

Lloyd Wright

I had the humbling honor of creating a family portrait for this great Patriarch a few years back, but never really knew him personally. I do, however, know of him through his daughter Ann, who has been a good friend ever since we moved into our neighborhood. Brother Wright was one of those amazing Salt of the Earth people who left a legacy of love that will endure for generations. The stories of strength, wisdom, and good nature that I have heard about him fill me with hope for all mankind. He was the kind of person who changed the world just by living in it. My heart goes out to you Ann, in your grief, and your to your children.

When planning a family portrait, I think it is so important to take into consideration what makes your family unique - what do you love to do, what are your personalities - that sort of thing. This is my sister's family. She was raised in Utah, in a camping/hiking family, and married a camping/hiking man. They live in Arkansas, and we have been so fortunate to have them for an extended visit. When we were planning their family portrait, I asked what they wanted to take back to Arkansas with them, and she said "MOUNTAINS!" The evening was absolutely perfect, and I know when they look at these images on their walls, not only will they feel a little closer to the mountains and landscape that they love, but all of us who live here! Thanks you guys for an amazing evening, and for letting me be surrogate mother to your little munchkins. I'm going to go through serious withdrawls when you leave. I love you all!

The Circus is Coming!

Props: We have a fantastic circus horse. Her name is Sally. She will be there, and I have a great pair of Swedish stilts. I will be buying some balloons, and possibly some cotton candy.... Definitely popsicles for all that participate as well.

Turning five is a big occasion at our house. I've done a special 5-year-old session for each of my kids doing an activity that they love. My son's portrait was while fishing, my oldest daugher's was dancing, and my baby girl decided she wanted to be Taylor Swift. We have spent hours and hours watching videos and listening to music in the car, and I am just thrilled that she no longer wants to be Michael Jackson. I literally wept while taking these, and she thought I was pretty weird, but I just kept thinking she is so awesome. I love you Baby!

The Garden is Ready!! (Utah Spring Portraits)

I think blog land is missing me - and I know my kids are! I have been photographing the fabulous production from The Children's Ballet Theater - The Secret Garden. It will probably be this weekend before the images are ready to view, if that is what you are looking for.

In the meantime, I thought I'd remind everyone that it is Full Bloomin Spring outside. The blossoms are just now prime, and will probably last for about 7-10 days. I am currently taking reservations for the garden. Right now the daffs are crazy awesome, and the peach tree will probably be bright pink this weekend/early next week. The tulips are about 10 days out, and the apple tree blossoms will follow shortly. Portrait Therapy (Utah Maternity Photography)

I have so much on my mind about this portrait session, I'm not sure where to start. This was such an incredible experience for me! My good friend is obviously expecting a baby, and she asked if I would do some maternity portraits of her. She wanted them to be more than a documentation of her pregnancy, and more a way to unify the multi-faceted aspects of her life. Every woman who becomes pregnant knows it's a major adjustment in self-image. On one hand, you are amazed at how your body will change to support another life, and at the same time, you may feel pretty negative about how those changes reflect in the mirror. S decided that she would deal with these emotions; as well as unify her pregnancy, her active lifestyle, her love of horses, and her self-image, by having portraits created that make her feel feminine, beautiful, active, and sexy. No pressure, Kris. Needless to say, it wasn't very difficult. S, you are such a strong, gorgeous, generous, and amazing woman! I have no doubt you will be a wonderful mother. Thank you again for granting me this perfect day!

Senior Portraits (Salt Lake professional photography)

Let's face some facts here about senior portraits:

You only graduate from high-school once. This is a major life milestone.
You will never again look like you did when you were 18.
Your kids will look at your senior portraits as a baseline for what you looked like when you were young (I know this because I remember pouring over my parents' yearbooks, trying to imagine them as young people.)
This will also probably be the last time your portraits will be all about you. After graduation, most people don't really have professional images taken of themselves until they get married.
Senior portraits are fun, full of energy, and all about your personality, hopes, and future.

I will never forget (and always hate) my senior portraits.

I had the Mary Kay lady come to my house to do a "make-over" which essentially made me look like the entire Mary Kay sample box exploded and I was caught in the shrapnel. I had them taken at the school from the contract photographer, and only have that one horrible, mass-produced, flatly lit head-shot, with a not-even-convincing fake smile as a monument to my final year in public education. There was no personality, it didn't even really look like me! I wish so bad that I would have known then what I know now - especially what constitutes a good photograph! I wish I would have done something that displayed my interest as an artist, me with my best girlfriends, or ANYTHING except this awful grip and grin. Ah, well, water under and all that... sigh*

Lucky for you, in honor of my regret, I am offering the following Senior Portrait Packages so you don't have to suffer the same mistake I did:

A friend asked me the other day why I put so much effort into my high-volume dance accounts. She stated (probably correctly) that I spend way too much time and money on something that ought to be cranked out as quickly and cheaply as possible. I thought about it for a while, and then told her that the whole reason I started doing dance portraits was because I wanted really nice dance portraits of my daughters. And if I wanted nice dance portraits of my dancers, wouldn't it stand to reason that every mother would want high quality dance portraits of their own children? It is for this reason that I put so much effort into my dance photography - and I try to photograph every dancer as if he/she was my own child. Too much? In the end, I don't think that is possible.

Here it Comes! (Utah Spring Photography)

Oh Joy and Rapture! Look what I found in my front yard today...

I think ole Punxsutawney Phil might be right this year, and we really might have an early spring. I have spring fever SOOOOO bad! Anyone else out there? I thought I'd give you a time-line of what I have in store for this year's spring and summer bloom portraits. All dates on these are not exact science, and mother nature is never very predictable. It should be a fantastic bloom year, though with all that snow this winter!

April: Garden Blooms. My private portrait garden is STUNNING when the pink, white, and purple tulips bloom. I will be booking mini garden sessions all season for a minimum deposit of only $125! With Easter coming in late April, this is an ideal location for fancy Springtime dresses, bunnies, bare feet, and candy-smeared faces! This is a very casual and fun location to relax and be a kid.

May: Orchard Blossoms. I am in the process of finding a fruit orchard for families this spring. My good friend may have a solution in Salem (just south of Provo.) I will be waiving any travel fees to this location. This is one of my all time favorite family portraits taken by Allison of English Photography. The setting is SO romantic, and perfect for families. Blooms vary every year, so stay tuned for more precise timing.

June: Sally and Cotton Candy. Meet Sally. She is my hand-painted carousel horse that I purchased last year for Wasatch Arts Center's Circus-themed dance recital portraits. She now resides in my hall-way, and we will be featuring her in a large grassy field sometime in June. I envision cotton candy, balloons, and maybe even some clown costumes for a one-of-a-kind portrait experience. Please leave a comment if you are interested as I need to find out what kind of response I can expect before finalizing plans.

July: Lavender Fields, Mona, UT. Young Living Family Farms is about an hour and a half south of West Jordan, and it blooms for only about 2 weeks midsummer. If you have never been to this location, it will absolutely knock your socks off. Not only do you get the vast fields of lavender, but an entire medieval village, old western town, and exquisitely landscaped portrait gardens. Sessions here could last HOURS depending on the subjects. There is a $75 fee for this location, but trust me, it's worth more than double that!

August: Albion Basin. The wildflowers up Alta Canyon have always been a favorite portrait location for me, but I have never done an Albion Basin event. I want to know how many people would be interested in this location. It does get fairly crowded at its peak on summer evenings. Let me know your thoughts.

September: The Bonneville Salt Flats. I will be headed to Lake Tahoe at the end of September, and am considering a day or two layover in Wendover. This location is one of the most unique portrait opportunities in the world, and it's right here at our doorstep! The lighting at sunset is out of this world.

Many of these locations are available year round, but they all have their peak seasons. These aren't the only locations to choose from either. I would love to hear some feedback about where you would like your portrait session. If I get enough comments about a location, I may run an event around it. I want to hear what you have in mind! Little Star (Utah Newborn Photography)

This newborn session is quite a bit different from my usual work. For one thing, we did this entire session at the new family's home, which was very comfortable for everyone. So much of their personality shines through in the decor and home environment. I LOVE creating newborn portraits this way! Thanks A&J for letting me spend an afternoon with my newest gorgeous niece! You guys are so relaxed for first time parents... you'd think you had been doing this for the past decade.

Boudoir Photography - Solutions to your fears

I love boudoir photography. I feel like giving a woman the gift of feeling beautiful is one of my sacred responsibilities as a professional photographer. I have noticed, however, that many women would like to give their husbands a gift of intimate portraits but there are several misconceptions holding them back. I'd like to bust a couple of myths about boudoir photography:

Myth #1 - "I am too fat to have any kind of portrait done - let alone images of my body!!"
Let's face it - this is probably the number one concern - and it's also the one that makes me the most angry. Without going into long rantings and ravings about our society's distorted conception of beauty, let me just say that every woman is beautiful no matter what the scale says. That being said, because I am a professional, I know how to light and pose you to make you look your very best. I've been studying light, shade and contour for over 12 years and I will make you feel beautiful, guaranteed.

Myth #2 - You have to wear lingerie in a boudoir portrait session.
WRONG! You can wear what ever you are comfortable in. I once had an awesome gal wear snow pants to her boudoir session because her husband thought her derrière looked hot in them. I've had woman wear their husband's button up dress shirts. There is no reason to reveal more than you are comfortable revealing. In fact, I often feel like less skin is more and you should leave plenty to the imagination. If you have a rockin pair of sweats that make you feel like Sunday afternoon - that is what you should wear!

Myth #3 - A boudoir portrait session will be very awkward.
Again, I am a professional, and will treat you with respect and sensitivity. We can do the session in your home where you are comfortable, or in my home studio if you need to get away from anyone particular. I would LOVE to do a boudoir session in a hotel room. The session will be fun, relaxed and make you feel like a million bucks.

Myth #4 - What on earth am I going to do with these portraits?? I'm not hanging one in my house!
I totally get this concern, but I have come up with all kinds of small, intimate products that can easily be stashed in the special drawer at home, hubby's glove compartment, or in a desk drawer at the office. A slideshow DVD would be a great way to start an evening after the kids have gone to bed! Call me for particulars about boudoir products - I have lots of great ideas.

Imaging USA and the Awards Ceremonies

I finally got some images ready from Imaging USA and the two awards ceremonies that I attended in San Antonio this year. There are a bunch more posted on Facebook, so if you want see more, friend me there.

This is me being recognized with the other Diamond Level Photographers of the Year. Out of thousands of word-wide entrants, there were only 7 of us who achieved this honor (someone is missing in the photo.) I was totally star-struck by the people on this stage. Afterwards, we were recognized with the Grand Imaging Award winners.

My amazing husband presented me with 50 diamonds to commemorate the event. I'm telling you, he is so awesome they should just define the word with his name. He spent the whole week with me in San Antonio, making this the best convention I've ever attended. He will need to watch out, or I just might have to take him every year.

The next night, I received my Master of Photography degree. My dear friend Allison (who incidentally is the only woman in the state of Utah who has her Master, her Craftsman, and her Certified Professional Photography certification) was my sponsor, meaning she was the one to put the Master ribbon around my neck. Our other dear friend Heather has some awesome video of the actual ceremony, and I'll post it if I can figure that out too. These are my girls, my sounding boards, and my co-plotters of evil plans... I love you guys.

Did some personal assignments with my favorite 4-year old model and some new little friends. Perfect location for snow photos - the ground was packed enough to walk on, and the trees were still frosty because they never really get direct light. If the last post was all about Musketeer number three, than this one is all about Musketeer number one (I'm two, and four has the audacity to live in Japan at present, so no Christmas photos for her...sniff sniff) I've known these girls' mom since 1983 (what, has it only been 27 years?), and now I see so much of her in her middle child it's a little unnerving. I know we were all hotties back in the day, but I still can't believe how beautiful our spawn are. Crazy beautiful, all of them. Thanks again to L for helping to install our new furnace! After being chastised severely by one of my closest friends for not updating my blog more, I am repenting and posting. Yes, I know, It's been forever - but I am going to play the December card here. Photography is such an awesome job, I love it! But honestly, December is one of those "hang on by your finger-nails and hope you make it through alive" kind of rides in this business. The blog always suffers. Anyway, my apologies!

Below is one of my other closest friends, and my oldest and most loyal client. Big T always kids around about being my "number one fan," but in all seriousness, I think he's earned the ranking. I have been creating artwork for this couple since 1994, when I painted their first portrait in my high-school oil painting class (ha ha ha!! The grey brick wall remains one of my all time faves!) Someday I'm really going to have to do a C&T through the years post just to prove how much I really have photographed you two. Thanks for being my number one fans!

Random act of Kindness & Generosity (Utah Family Photography)

Sometimes I'm completely blown away by the generosity of others. This evening I got to help my long-time friend, fellow U of U art department graduate, and photographer with her family portraits. We went to a local urban street, and I was setting up in front of what appeared to be an abandoned building. Imagine my surprise when two charming men popped out of the doorway, and asked what we were doing. I asked if we could have permission to shoot in front of their building, and they kindly said, "Sure!" After we were done there, one of the gentlemen asked if I would like to see a really cool brick wall to use. We followed him through an alley-way and finished up our little portrait session. I was kind of in "photo" mode, so I didn't really look around until after we were done. The place was amazing! Graffiti walls, old peeling paint, brick and plaster everywhere... and I could tell it was all done to accommodate portraits. Come to find out, the gentleman is Al Thelin, another local photographer who has been teaching photography for over 20 years, and has at least double that experience behind the camera. He basically let me have access to his private outdoor studio free of charge for about an hour. What an amazing individual, and what an awesome experience.

Not Always Perfect (Utah Family Photography)

After a very fun session with six crazy kids, I was talking to their dad about photography, and some of the concerns I have about the current direction professional photography seems to be heading. We were discussing the recent phenomenon that has hundreds of people becoming hired photographers without any professional training, and very little experience. I related how I've spent the last 12 years getting every educational experience I could, and what a perfectionist I am with my own images - striving eternally for the perfect light, the perfect composition, the perfect expressions, etc. He seemed a little surprised and said, "Yeah, but I've always thought you were a pretty laid-back photographer. You always seem to capture my kids exactly as they are."

I've thought a lot about what he said. I don't consider myself a "life-style" or "photojournalistic" photographer. Most of the images I create are fairly planned and molded. I like to be able to control the variables and end with something timeless and beautiful. His comment made me remember that sometimes the unplanned portrait can be the best one after all. That being said, I will say that I think the image below has some awesome lighting, decent composition, and you can't beat those expressions! Pretty near perfection if you ask me. Thanks B&J. Time Goes Marching On (Utah Family Photography)

The last time I created a family portrait for the A family, it was with my Hasselblad 501C. I remember buying that camera thinking, "this is the last camera I will ever have to buy." The medium format Giant has been around for decades, and I thought once I owned one, it would all be lights, lenses, and backdrops from there. Didn't quite turn out that way, did it? As a professional digital photographer, I'm looking at the realization that I will probably have to replace my camera every 4-5 years (if I'm lucky and the technology lasts that long.) I sold that 501C to be able to buy my current workhorse, and every once in a while I miss it, and wish I had held onto it. Not today, but sometimes.

"A" family, it was so great to see all the kids again! I still can't get over the shock of S driving the family van, and the knowledge that someday that'll be MY son in the driver's seat (shudder!) I usually don't like BW images in the fall landscape (seems kind of off the point to me) but this close-up of your faces seemed so timeless in the classic medium, I just love it - I love that you are all laughing, and that C FINALLY smiled for me. I'm sure I was being extremely ridiculous at that point.

One of my all-time favorite couple portraits. This images speaks volumes about your relationship, your family, and your lives.

I also loved our furry friends who were not spooked by us at all, and just ignored our loud obnoxious noises while muching away at the leaves. Too funny!

I love this family. I've known the H family since we moved into our neighborhood over six years ago, and I think we've been discussing a family portrait for about that long. I get the privilege of working with their older daughters twice a week through our church, and they remind me so much of my sisters and I when we were young. Miss T reminds me especially of myself, in appearance and attitude. It was a pleasure to get to create a piece of art for their home. Thanks for being so patient, L while I processed these!

Man, I love these kids! Those smiles, those eyes! They are so loyal to each other, too - a tight, happy bunch of kids. :-)

Resistance to Change (Model and Senior Photography in Salt Lake)

I took a fabulous class today from Ali of Rock That OCF. It was extremely painful... in a good way. I don't mean the class was painful (it was actually fantastic - well taught, lots of hands-on experience, fun people.) I mean the whole concept of off camera flash was difficult for me. I have used flash on location before, but this was totally different, with all sorts of weird aperture and shutter settings, and new equipment to learn. I struggled between learning something new, and doing things the same way I usually do them. Me and my clunky tripod, on shutter speed 1/10th of a second... it was actually pretty funny. Anyway, the verdict is in, however, and I definitely think this is a technique I can adapt into my routine when occasion demands. Just ignore the posing issues in some of these - I didn't take the time I'm used to taking to make everything perfect, and we were all sharing models, so I didn't want to be too overbearing. I mostly tried to shoot from the back of the pack when I could steal a pop of the Pocket Wizard. Thanks everyone who was in the class for a great day. I really wish I could have gone to lunch with everyone.

Being Flexible (Salt Lake Family Photography)

This session helped remind me the importance of being flexible. I usually schedule portrait sessions 1-2 hours before sunset, and lately I've been doing a LOT of location scouting to find really over-the-top fall leaf locations. M told me she wanted more of a green look, and the session had to be scheduled in the morning. She also wanted to stay close to home because of the early time frame we were working with. Fortunately, they have a fantastic back yard, and neighborhood, so we were able to fill all our requirements. In the end, I was REALLY glad we did stay close to home because Little Miss S (and yes, that S could easily stand for Sunshine!) was so much more comfortable there than she would have been anywhere else. It was the right call, and I love how personalized the session turned out.

Thanks once again R family for being so nice and patient with me - especially when I keep pushing for "just one more!" It has been a real pleasure getting to see your family evolve through the past couple of years.

Happy Camp Half-Blood Campers

We got a little star-struck this evening. My Mom, kids, and I got to meet Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, the Kane Chronicles, and the new Camp Half-Blood series, The Heroes of Olympus. If you don't know already, we are major fans of Rick Riordan's books, and even have custom camp tee-shirts that we had made by Zeus Tees.

We read in the newspaper last night that The King's English Bookshop was hosting this ticketed event today, so I rushed up there this morning to get our tickets. Coolest... Bookstore... Ever! I have to say, I was dying to just stay and browse all day, but I had a preschooler to pick up, so I didn't get the chance. Anyone want to make a book date to go explore it with me? We met a few of the owners at the event tonight, and felt like we had just reconnected with old friends. They had great reading recommendations, and said they have signing events like tonight's all the time, especially with local authors. I got on their mailing list immediately.

Anyway, the event with Mr. Riordan tonight was fantastic! He spoke for a few minutes about how he started the Percy Jackson series, and why he decided to continue writing about Camp Half-Blood. He was so entertaining to listen to, and my kids were enthralled with every word he said. They were quoting him the whole time we stood in line for our book-signing. I printed my two Percy Jackson portraits that I did last spring, and gave him copies. I was so nervous, I can't even remember what he said to me!! Then my kids got to meet him, and I couldn't even remember how to operate the stupid point and shoot camera, and my hands were shaking so bad that all I got were two lousy photos that aren't that great, but at least I got a couple. All in all, it was a fantastic evening, and the best part was sharing it with my children.

Variety Show (Utah Family Photography)

Usually, when I photograph a family, I strive to achieve that one great image that will go on the wall, and be enjoyed for generations to come. There are usually many factors that try to get in the way of this: weather, lighting, cranky kids, hungry parents, etc. When this Dad booked a session with me, and informed me that they have six kids ranging in age from 2 to 17, I was prepared for a very difficult session. Boy was I over-prepared! This was one of the easiest families I've ever photographed. Everyone was on board, and in good spirits, and so fun to work with. I also had some amazing light this evening, which left me with no obstacles except my puzzle-solving skills which weren't bad that evening either. The result was we got some incredible variety, and several gorgeous family portraits. Good luck choosing, A&K!

On the Bento Bandwagon

This post is expressly for my sister in law who insisted that if I started "bento-ing" that I had to post an image. What the blimey is a bento? Why am I taking photos of my kids' lunches? Unexpected but not Unwelcome (West Jordan Family Photography)

I've spent the last couple of weeks scouting fall leaf locations for family portraits looking for prime autumn color. I had this location picked out for the V family, and we headed up tonight thinking it was going to be bright and sunny. And indeed, when we started capturing, it was. It only took about 15 minutes, however, for the weather to do a "180" and before we knew it, we were right in the cloud bank - and it was c-o-l-d. But the lighting and the clouds were so dramatic, I knew we had been given something special. The image that resulted was completely unique to anything I've done before, and my only regret is that I didn't have my family right there at that exact moment so I could have the same portrait for my own house. :-) Thank you so much, V fam for this!

And you claim you are "not photogenic." Shame on you.

Silver Lake Triple Header (Salt Lake Family Photography)

I've been up to Brighton so often in the past week I feel like I should buy a cabin there to save on gas. Actually, I'll take the cabin just for the fall scenery. It'd be well worth the price. I have so much to post I've got to consolidate, so I'll post a week's worth of work to conserve time:

My week started out with photographing one of my best friends, and in my opinion the Queen of Family Photography herself, Allison Watkins of English Photography. She has had so much influence in my life and on my career, I can't even begin to describe how nervous I was! Not in an "Oh, I'm going to mess up" kind of way, but in a "I've got to give her something spectacular!" kind of way. I think she is pretty spectacular, and her family is so good looking, that it really wasn't too hard. Thanks so much for this opportunity, Allison! I was very humbled and honored that you trusted this to me.

So I didn't think the leaves would last all week, but because of the hot dry weather, and not a lot of storms to blow them down, it still looked great by Saturday. Even though I have some great fall-leaf-background images of the B family, I just LOVED this close up and all their great expressions! You guys were so much fun. I can't remember if this was the "Jar Jar" image, but that whole thing just cracked me up!

This evening the gods of Fall finally showed up with the cold weather. I am not a cold weather fan, but even I thought it was about time! The AC in my van is broken, and I really didn't want to get it fixed until next summer, but good grief, this week was hot! Anyway, I want to give a great big thanks to the C family who answered the call of duty when I sent a desperate plea via email for another family to shoot in this amazing location. This is the first year I've ever shot here, and it is definitely on the top of my list now! I couldn't let the season's peak go without doing one more session here. Thanks for braving the cold, and for throwing things together at the last minute. It was well worth all the effort!

In conjunction with the Early Bird Event, I am spotlighting two locations: The first is Silver Lake at Brighton. The aspens and low brush are just turning gold, and I anticipate the leaves will peak in about 7-10 days. The advantage to this location is it's accessibility (nice level boardwalk - no hiking required. Great for older adults or young children.) The disadvantage will be it's accessibility (ironic, huh?) It will probably be fairly crowded. If you book one of my late September days, and choose Silver Lake as your location, I will waive the regular $30 travel fee. (Excuse the poor photo quality - all I had today was my iPhone!)

The second location I love right now is Fairview Canyon. Picture rolling hills of grass and sage accented by huge groves of Aspens. My sister lives nearby, and every time I visit her, I long to do a family session in this stunning scenery. The leaves will probably be prime in about 7-10 days from now, and will feature that signature Aspen gold. The disadvantage of this location is its 2.5 hour drive from my base in West Jordan. It would be a half-day adventure, but the drive through Spanish Fork Canyon is breath-taking. You could make a day of it complete with a picnic and your own photographic safari. If you want to take advantage of this unique, one-of-a-kind location before October 1, I will only charge a $30 travel fee, instead of my usual $100.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Utah Child Portrait)

I have The Children's Ballet Theater to thank for this session. Their end of the year performance of the Wizard of Oz prompted me to get the movie on Blu-Ray (insert angels singing and glorious light streaming from heaven - this movie is absolutely breath-taking on Blu-Ray!) and ever since, my youngest has become Dorothy herself. If you ever want to hear the sweetest thing in the world, come over and listen to her sing Over the Rainbow - guaranteed to make your troubles will melt like lemon-drops.

I have to give another big shout out to my costume designer who is so amazing and talented and totally gets me - words fail. Another thumbs up to both Lara and Cornbelly's who lent me their cornfields. Of all the corn mazes in Utah, Cornbelly's is by far the coolest and most family friendly I've ever seen. I can't wait for them to open October 1.

Exceeding my own expectations (Utah Child Photography)

I need some opinions! I'm working on my Christmas Card (yes - already! I've got to get it done before the incredibly busy fall season arrives.) and I can't decide which of these images of my kids I like the best for the front. I haven't had a great portrait of the three of my kids together for a while, and I created these images in the lavender fields last July. I usually don't have a ton to choose from when I photograph my own kids, but this time they were great, and now I can't choose. Comments?
